Always select a generous amount more than what you intend to use to leave yourself extra room for masking seamlessly. In addition to using Screen mode, masking with flame is usually done with a soft brush to avoid obviously fake edges, so you’ll need room to feather the edges. I go by the gentleness of the fire’s gradient as a guide for how to mimic this transition, so take a look at the softness of the fire’s edges and make sure you grab enough room in the selection to mimic the feathering.

4. Before copying, make sure the correct layer is selected and visible (we all miss this from time to time). Copy the selection (Ctrl/Cmd+C), then shift back over to the composite image tab and paste (Ctrl/Cmd+V).

5. Drag the pasted layer (in this case the skull shape) into the Fire group folder, then move your fire image into a good position in the composite with the Move tool (V) (Figure 8.11).
